Living a Life by Rachel1987 by DataPacRat Living a Life by Rachel1987 by DataPacRat
Drawn by rachel1987 ( [link] ) , originally posted at [link] .

Artist's notes:

This is a commission that I did for datapacrat! He asked that I draw a scene from a story that's being written about his characters by someone else.

Pretty much his character (Data, in the bed) is recuperating in the hospital and while she's there she'd living her life through this other mouse. Both of them are wearing collars and glasses that transmit what's going on in real time.

I'm rather happy with how this came out. I was unsure about it when I first got the commission but it turned out much better than I expected!

Wow, that's an interesting story!  And he can talk to his "Avatar" and tell her what to say?

Well, they're both 'she's; and when everything is turned on, the connection is much more direct - what Dee in the hospital bed tries to say, the mousie at the cafe says. Just like however Dee tries to move her (missing) limbs, the mousie moves. The short story centred around this picture is at datapacrat.deviantart.com/art/…. :)

I read it, it's very fascinating!  Why her avatar went ahead and actually had the daughter and kept the guy?  Many would say, oh it's just stupid writing, but I can clearly see how it could happen.  Danielle might have checked in on the relationship Dee was having with this wolf David.  She might have thought, "Yeah, these two are so perfect!  And I get to hear every intimate word!  So fascinating!  I am getting ideas how rewrite that great novel I have been working for so long."  When Dee proposed that she(in Danielle's body) and David go back to her place, it might have been against the rules for DSO's.  However Danielle might have been all for it, as she might have clearly enjoyed the life experience she was gaining from this.  Also David might have been attractive to Danielle as well, this perfect handsome self sacrificing hero.  I can totally see this!

As are her legs; and how she lost her limbs is a story unto itself, which I'm working on getting written.

I've posted a flash-doll at [link] (caution: artistic nudity) which shows both her limbless state, as well as several of the prosthetic replacement limbs she eventually acquires.

The story has been written: "A Mile in Another Rat's Paws", which can be read at [link] .

All three of the furries in the picture are real, living, breathing people.

Essentially, yes; though that's only the /start/ of the story.

Nothing quite so mundane. :) I'm debating how much I want to reveal here rather than in the story itself...

*Potential Spoiler Warning*

(Psst... you see the brown mouse-lady's belly, hidden a bit by her arm? She's not overweight...)

One question, is the other mouse an android controlled by Dee, or is she a willing participant in the exchange?

Other than that, I do love the pic and the concept in general makes for good plot potential. I look forward to reading the story this came from. :)

While, in this setting, androids are available, in this story and pic, she's a real, live mousie. :)

I see. I wonder what that would be like. :)

Does this kind of link work two ways and give priority control to either participant?

...or I guess I could just wait for the story if you don`t wanna post spoilers. ;P

I don't mind spoilering the setting's general details - I even have a webpage that collects all the details established so far, at [link] .

The basic premise of this tech is the ability to non-invasively read and write the motor and sensory nerves, mainly in the spinal column with the collars depicted here. This allows various effects, including blocking all feeling (good for anesthetic), paralyzing motor control (more effective than handcuffs), inducing arbitrary physical sensations (good for VR-type game feedback), inducing arbitrary physical motions (handy for coordinating flashmob dance routines), sensing how a person is trying to move their body (good for VR game controls), and recording what sensations a body is feeling (so you can really feel what an actor is doing in a movie). Combining these in various ways leads to even more applications, from keeping your body flailing about while you control a robot, to, as seen in this picture, one person feeling and controlling someone else's body.

(The special goggles seen in the pic are used because they're a lot more practical than trying to get sensors close to the cranial nerves controlling eye movements, let alone trying to go all the way back to the optic nerve.)

Some of the social consequences of this tech existing... are what are to be explored in the story. :)

Interesting theory. Ironically very possible with the current rate of advancement in technology. And on top of that a rather touching and question provoking concept. This is very well done.
